Preparing for Your Recording: How to Get the Most Out of Your Session
A professional vocal recording at a studio like Barecatyra in Salzburg does not begin with the first note into the microphone, but days in advance. Studio time is a valuable and costly resource. Thorough preparation ensures that you can channel all your energy into your artistic performance rather than wasting time on technical glitches or missing documents. In this guide, we explain how to optimize your physical, mental, and organizational readiness.

Physical Preparation: Your Voice as an Instrument
The voice is a biological instrument that depends directly on your physical condition. In the days leading up to your appointment at our Salzburg studio, prioritize hydration. Drink plenty of still water; this keeps the vocal folds supple and reduces unwanted mouth noises, which are often captured by high-sensitivity large-diaphragm tube microphones.
Avoid extremely cold drinks or very spicy foods immediately before the session, as these can irritate the throat. A proven professional tip is to avoid dairy products shortly before recording, as they can promote mucus production, leading to a "clicking" sound in the recording. A short walk through Salzburg's Altstadt before your appointment can also help relax the body and deepen your breathing.
Mental Readiness and Song Mastery
Nothing consumes more time than repeatedly searching for the right entry point into a verse. Go through your songs in exhaustive detail. Know every breath and every emphasis. We recommend not just reading the lyrics, but internalizing them within the rhythm of the backing track.
Consider in advance which emotions you want to convey in each passage. Should the verse sound intimate and breathy, or does the chorus require full power? The clearer your vision is, the more efficiently our producer Verena Winkler can guide you during the recording process.
Technical Preparation: Files and Backing Tracks
To ensure the session starts smoothly, the instrumentals must be ready. Ensure your backing tracks are in a high-quality format (preferably WAV or AIFF). Check if the tempo (BPM) is constant if we are working with a click track.
If you have your own demo recordings, please bring them. They serve as a reference for the desired intonation and dynamics. For more detailed information on technical delivery, please visit our guide on File Formats and Delivery.

Managing Nervousness in the Studio
It is completely normal to feel nervous before the microphone—even for experienced musicians. The acoustically optimized rooms and the calm atmosphere in our studio on Getreidegasse are designed to give you confidence.
Use the first 15 to 30 minutes for a warm-up. Sing light exercises, loosen your jaw, and get used to the sound of your voice through the headphones. Our team supports you in creating a relaxed environment where you can unfold your creativity.
Time Management and Budgeting
Plan your session realistically. A common mistake is assuming that a complete song can be recorded perfectly in two hours. Factor in time for setup, warm-up, and multiple takes.
Remember that at Barecatyra, a deposit of 30% is required for reservation. To keep your costs under control, read our guide on Budgeting Your Studio Session. Good planning prevents stress and ensures you leave the session feeling satisfied.
What Happens After the Recording?
Once the takes are "in the can," the selection phase begins. Together with the engineer, we select suitable passages (comping). These raw data form the basis for subsequent mixing and mastering.
We provide the recorded tracks in high resolution. We recommend noting during the recording which takes you particularly liked, as this accelerates the process in post-production.
